Segmented Woodturning To Fix My Mother’s Old Stone Clock

Sometimes the best project is a simple project to help someone else in a small but critical way. This is the case with this project. My mother has a sentimental attachment to a stone clock that her brother in law made for her many, many years ago. Unfortunately the clock stopped working. Testing revealed that […]

A Triple Multi Axis Egg Cup Challenge Answered

After last week’s egg cup, Larry joked “why not an eccentric egg cup”. I took that as a challenge. This triple egg cup is turned from red cedar and finished with beeswax and mineral oil. The turning axis was shifted 1.25″ in three directions 120 degrees apart to turn the hollows for the eggs. It […]

Utah Woodturning Symposium Egg Cup – Not On The Clock

While at the Utah Woodturning Symposium, I participated in the Egg Cup Turning contest. In the contest, either two individuals or two teams of two woodturners competed against each other to turn an egg cup as quickly as possible. Many who had participated in previous years turned their egg cup in about 30 seconds. My […]

Multi-Axis Turning Screwdriver With Ferrule

A little bit ago, I made a simple handle for a 4-in-1 (actually 6-in-1 but I never use the hex driver). At the time, I noted that eccentric techniques could prevent the screwdriver from rolling easily. Here’s the upgrade. I shifted the turning axis 0.25 inch in opposite directions to turn two opposing flatter curves. […]

Woodturning A Multi-Tip 4-In-1 Screwdriver

I’ve been on location for remodeling a house in Mesa Arizona. One of the tools I found very useful was an ordinary 4 in 1 screwdriver. In this project, I dress up that screwdriver. It is a very quick, simple project using only a cheap screwdriver from Home Depot. The handle is Padauk finished with […]

A Segmented Solar Spring Flower

It has been a tough winter for many people; and spring is having a tough time getting underway. Let’s help it along with a solar powered dancing flower. The flower mechanism is purchased at a local dollar store. The project is to turn a nice wood cup to hide the awful plastic. I grabbed a […]

An Analog Clock In A Digital World

Do you need a reminder what clock-wise and counter clock-wise mean? How about a nice desk or counter top analog clock? The thought also struck me that segmented woodturning relates to solid woodturning as digital relates to analog. What do you think? This clock consists of 3 red oak segment rings, a walnut plug and […]

Collapsible Baton For Musicians

I leveraged my experience with magic wands to make this collapsible music baton for my daughter in law. This baton takes it to the next level. A baton need to be the same length as the distance from the director’s inner elbow to the director’s fingertips. For her, this is 14.5 inches. I also made […]
