Rejected, Discarded But Beautiful Burl Bowl

Cottonwood Burl Bowl

This cottonwood was discarded at our club’s monthly Saturday gathering. Why discarded? The piece had a pair of smaller burl bumps. One had an accidental gash from a chain saw; the other had large obvious voids.

I picked it up anyway and decided to see if I could get anything from it. It yielded a 6″ diameter, 2″ tall bowl with amazing burl figure. Walnut oil brings out the beautiful color.

Enjoy.

Hi Alan, I especially enjoyed your demo today (4-13-24) I was so pleased to see someone else isn’t afraid or too fussy to take on a forsaken piece of wood. I like to turn burls and figured wood that has voids and flaws. They always turn out to be very attractive and desirable to others. I find they are often the first to sell at the art stores where I show my work.
