The last few years my sibling have gotten together for a reunion since we live in multiple states. A couple of years ago, I helped them turn pens. Last year, we turned various spindle kits. They enjoyed it. This year I thought I would help them turn a small bowl. But what to have them turn? Hmmm.

Well, last year at SWAT, I ran into a fellow doing exacted what I need to do. That is. Give people who are no turners, a good experience in creating a bowl. His medium was a 2×8 which would standardize and give participants a selection of bowls to emulate. I adopted his approach.

The wood is a home store 2 x 8 probably fir – not my preferred wood for my projects but inexpensive for this experience.

The lathe is either a Ricon 12″ or Wen 8″. This work well for group pen turning and are portable.

The tools are round carbide cutters that take little instructions.

The finish is walnut oil.

This video and project are to test my assumptions before involving my siblings.

The bottom line – I think it will work – We’ll see.
